I think about my Family Stuffing Recipe every time I think of a holiday or family celebration. It immediately brings a smile to my face and even makes my mouth water because it is so delicious.
My Family Stuffing Recipe was handed down from my mother-in-law to her children. I’m not sure where the recipe originated, but it was passed from family to family and I have already given it to my children.
When I think of a holiday, I especially think of Thanksgiving. Every year at Thanksgiving we think about what we are grateful for and hope to be with family and friends to share in our celebration. Being grateful for the wonderful food that we were all about to share together, made everything special.
Our family had a great meal like turkey, with gravy, stuffing, potatoes, (at least 2 kinds), and a great vegetable. We always offered wine with our meal for the adults and a “juice” for the younger generation, We would follow the meal with at least 2 or 3 homemade pies; Apple, Pumpkin, and my favorite, Chocolate. Wow, it was great and everyone enjoyed being together to share this special time together. I can even remember my kids fighting over who got to serve the stuffing first! Funny, huh? It was just their way of showing how much they enjoyed it. The stuffing was the center of our holiday meal.
When we would clean everything up and give out leftovers for people to take home, the stuffing was always gone! Such a shame we had no leftovers.
I decided we needed to do at least 2 batches of stuffing so no one felt slighted and there would be leftovers to send home with someone or just keep for another meal.
Well, that worked out just wonderful. There was enough to go around and we were still able to enjoy it another day. Now that my kids are out of the house, I still do a double batch of the dressing, but now I freeze one. So glad I did that because one of my children is in Pennsylvania and couldn’t make it home for the holidays last year. So… I decided to pack up a batch of stuffing I had frozen and I mailed it to him. He was very surprised and I could actually hear the joy in his voice when he opened it. He sure didn’t leave it frozen for long though!
I thought how wonderful a small thing like dressing could do so much to make a great family gathering. It made everything just amazing with so many good memories.
I’ve decided to share my recipe with you and hopefully, you will have amazing stories to share together also. Perhaps, just a little, this recipe will help to make a small difference. (I’d sure like to think so.)
Here it is…
(Linda’s) STUFFING RECIPE
Ingredients:
- Turkey heart, gizzard, liver, and neck from inside of Turkey
- 2 Brats (remove casing)
- A handful of ground beef
- 2 very large onions (or 5 medium)
- 5 stalks of celery
- 12 slices of dried bread (Leave it out for just an hour or 2 before using it)
- Parsley, to taste
- 3 eggs
- Poultry Seasoning (to taste)
- Salt and Pepper
Boil the heart, liver, gizzards, and neck in saltwater for 45 minutes. Set aside and let cool. Save the juice.
Cut the meat from the neck and put it through a meat grinder with the other parts. (You can use a food processor, but be careful not to make it mushy, keep it on the drier side). Also grind in the chopped meat, onions, celery, and bread. Put into a large bowl.
Add parsley, eggs, poultry seasoning, 1 tsp salt, and a little pepper. Add some of the juice you saved from the turkey parts if needed. Do not add too much because you don’t want a mushy dressing. (I actually have never even had to use any of the juice).
Put dressing into a baking dish, uncovered, and bake at 325 to 350 degrees until it starts to crisp on top – no longer than 2 hours.
Serve with your turkey and some great gravy, you will really enjoy it!
I still use the old-fashioned grinder, I even found old ones to give to my kids. I don’t know why but I like the texture so much better. It is more work that way, but we’ve made it into a “special occasion.” I get all the ingredients to be chopped ready and then my husband and I work together to get it done. I put the ingredients into the grinder and he turns the crank. It doesn’t sound exciting but we always enjoy spending that time together. We even have a glass of wine while we’re “working.”
